Sreeleela Faces Backlash For Saying Periods Are Not An Excuse, Netizens Call Remarks Insensitive And Unrealistic

Actress Sreeleela, who recently earned her MBBS degree and is now also a doctor, has landed in controversy after a video of her remarks on menstruation went viral.

During an awareness event attended by a large number of women, she was asked whether periods ever caused difficulties during her shoots. Responding to the question, Sreeleela said that menstruation should not be seen as a limitation. She stated, “Periods should not be a problem for us… I have shot many hit songs while I was menstruating… periods should not become an excuse for a woman.”

She further added that women should push beyond both physical and mental barriers. Questioning the idea of using periods as a reason to step back, she said that when women demand equal rights and opportunities as men, it may not be right to hold back due to such challenges. She emphasised the need to “push ourselves” despite discomfort.

While some appreciated her for openly speaking about a topic often considered taboo, many others criticised her statements, leading to widespread backlash on social media. Several users pointed out that her comments overlooked the fact that menstrual experiences vary greatly from person to person.

Critics also highlighted that, as a medical professional, she should have acknowledged that severe period pain can make it difficult for many women to function normally. Many argued that suggesting women simply “push through” pain sends an unrealistic and insensitive message.

The controversy has sparked a broader debate online, with people discussing the balance between empowerment and medical realities, and whether her remarks were motivational or dismissive of genuine health concerns.
